Jabbôq's musical director, Emanuel Schmidt, is also an experienced guitar instructor and has lectured in improvisation, harmony, arranging, and composition at tertiary institutions. While earning his Diploma of Creative Arts in Music with Honours at the Wesley Institute, Emanuel wrote a guitar method. He has since taught over 10,000 hours and enjoys passing on his experience, knowledge, and passion to committed students. Emanuel holds a Ph.D. from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

During his 14 years of teaching and lecturing experience, Emanuel has taught students who started as beginners and who have ended up at a professional level, and his students have been accepted into The Sydney Conservatorium of Music’s Jazz Course and into the Australian Institute of Music’s Tertiary Music Course. Emanuel has also taught tertiary guitar students at the Wesley Institute, where he has also lectured in Harmony and Composition. He is on the Masters Program staff at Wesley Institute.

As a result of his teaching philosophy, Emanuel encourages his students to become well-rounded, competent players through the acquisition of knowledge, technique, and passion. Students absorb skills such as scale playing, improvising, sight-reading, performance of chord progressions and musical styles, learning songs by ear, transcription, and acquisition and performance of repertoire. Based on the philosophy that enjoyment levels are proportionate to the student's commitment to growth, students are expected to attend one 1-hour lesson each week and to practise their instrument a minimum of 45 minutes, five times per week.

Are you a year 12 student doing HSC Music and would like some guidance? Have you been meaning to learn the guitar, but never made that first step? Or maybe you have been playing for some time but have hit a brick wall and need some fresh ideas.  Make it one of your aims this year to express yourself creatively and you will notice how much this can enrich your life.

Comments by former students

"The lessons you gave me...in fact...revolutionised the way I thought about jazz and improvised music and set me on a whole new path of exploration, understanding and enjoyment of my instrument.  I have already been able to help other musicians  ...because of the things I learnt from you and I know this will continue ..."  -Nicola

"Thank you very much for the many years of guitar tuition. The past years have been an extremely enjoyable learning experience, and you have given me the skills on the guitar which will undoubtedly last a lifetime." -Milo
